AI is everywhere, whether you like it or not, it has taken over the majority of digital space. From writing emails to clients, to creating Instagram posts, artificial intelligence has overtaken most of the tasks that humans were doing. I personally have taken a liking to content tools like ChatGPT and Bearly, simply for the ease of drafting boring and long client emails, trying to educate them that digital marketing is not a 1 day miracle pill.
Since AI was the most talked about topic of 2024, why should 2025 be any different. Digital giants like Google, Meta, Microsoft, threatened by the popularity of OpenAI have started working on their own AI solution. The competition is going to be huge and I have a hunch that we will end up with tons of AI generated content and each will look similar eventually. However, for now, Google has taken a leap and launched its Gemini search last year. For most of 2024, it was hugely discussed with SEO moguls commenting on what will be their future if half of the Google search results space is occupied by AI generated content.
Understanding Google Gemini
Google Gemini stepped into the spotlight in early 2024 to compete and stay ahead with AI technologies. As a multimodal AI model, Gemini processes and integrates text, images, audio, and video data, enabling it to comprehend and generate human-like content with remarkable accuracy. Its capabilities extend beyond mere data processing; Gemini exhibits advanced reasoning, planning, and contextual understanding, positioning it as a game-changer in the realm of search and information retrieval.
How is Gemini Impacting SEO?
If you have noticed Google Gemini’s results take up a significant pixel length of your screen and do not let you scroll down. And why would you do so, if you are getting your answers at the top itself? This impacts the SEO efforts of the websites and increases their struggle to become visible on your screen.
We are not getting limited to just this issue…
Shift in Search Dynamics: Gemini’s integration into search results has altered user interaction patterns. AI-generated overviews and direct answers reduce the necessity for users to click through to websites, diminishing organic traffic—a trend substantiated by recent data.
Content Redundancy: With Gemini’s ability to generate comprehensive summaries, the value proposition of traditional content is under scrutiny. Users may find AI-generated content sufficient, potentially bypassing human-authored articles and reviews.
Erosion of Affiliate Revenues: Gemini’s deep research capabilities, particularly in product and travel reviews, provide users with exhaustive information, rendering third-party affiliate sites less essential. This shift threatens the revenue models of numerous websites reliant on affiliate marketing.
While I had referred to several articles to gather some in-depth knowledge about this issue, I came across data published by SE Journal that says “Finance queries that trigger AI Overviews have grown from around 5% to 20% of the time. BrightEdge data shows that Google AIO coverage is trending upwards and is predicted to cover an increasing amount of search queries across other topics, specifically in travel, restaurants, and entertainment.” [1]
What strategies can you adopt to escape from this new issue?
Come on Google has been throwing challenges on SEO professionals for a long time and every time we have figured out a way.
Enhanced Content Quality: Good content is the need of the hour. Trust me, with AI’s take over on, the internet is filled with similar kind of content. No one offers unique insights, in-depth analysis, and personalized perspectives—attributes that AI may struggle to replicate authentically. Remember, AI might make your content work easy but it isn’t adding that WOW factor in the content anymore. So try to make your content user worthy; you never know if your content gets displayed in the AI results, it is possible that users might visit your page for those additional tips.
Technical SEO Optimization: Who would wait for 10 minutes for a website to load? The patience level of users has significantly reduced. So you must ensure that your websites are technically sound, with fast loading times, mobile optimization, and robust security measures, remains crucial. These factors contribute to user experience, which search algorithms continue to prioritize.
Leveraging AI Tools: Get those mundane tasks automated with AI, save that time to optimize your content. SEO professionals are incorporating AI tools, including Gemini, to streamline tasks such as keyword research, content optimization, and data analysis. This symbiotic relationship with AI can enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
Citations are Important: Last but not the least, add relevant citations to your article. This will send the right signals to Google’s search algorithm as well as AI searches to help them decide if the content is unique, informative and relevant to users.
The Road Ahead
While Gemini presents challenges, it also offers opportunities for the SEO industry to evolve. By focusing on human-centric content, the industry’s intent and mapping appropriate content structure for websites one can deliver genuine valuable content to the users.
